Sen. McCain fought long and hard in this campaign. And he's fought even

listen to you, especially when we disagree. And, above all, I will ask you

It can't happen without you, without a new spirit of service, a new spirit

So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of responsibility, where each

Let us remember that, if this financial crisis taught us anything, it's

6 p, S& G! J) zIn this country, we rise or fall as one nation, as one people. Let's resist 4 U: b8 e; X. y; ]% W
the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and

Let's remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the 5 i" \+ W/ s2 w
banner of the Republican Party to the White House, a party founded on the
# J% K m6 K+ N) wvalues of self-reliance and individual liberty and national unity.
- A6 n3 O! u/ c" J* T' m' K( t4 j! V6 s) Z c1 \8 ~
Those are values that we all share. And while the Democratic Party has won 4 u' ~$ B+ p' {1 M6 q; J2 Z
a great victory tonight, we do so with a measure of humility and
+ x! S. E( E; X$ s+ vdetermination to heal the divides that have held back our progress./ D4 p3 H) s; }1 v% ^& O7 _

This election had many firsts and many stories that will be told for

ballot in Atlanta. She's a lot like the millions of others who stood in
% n# j* S; l* [' sline to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing: Ann
* [# i' T* N% I, l* ^Nixon Cooper is 106 years old.% z ?/ p$ h: U) \4 b
6 @2 X( W7 W" P/ {She was born just a generation past slavery; a time when there were no cars
8 ?1 Q: ?1 i0 f' F6 H: B Gon the road or planes in the sky; when someone like her couldn't vote for
+ w2 o" T( K7 S9 Utwo reasons -- because she was a woman and because of the color of her skin.) P/ q( S1 M8 H

And tonight, I think about all that she's seen throughout her century in : w$ {% U& d- x9 Y9 p: s; m

times we were told that we can't, and the people who pressed on with that

a `4 A: t4 B4 A* }, ~! W0 KAt a time when women's voices were silenced and their hopes dismissed, she

can.% s+ h3 ~: F+ Z4 V- S* ~
% T# ^" m7 A+ {) c( vWhen there was despair in the dust bowl and depression across the land, she 3 g) g/ C" M" S- `9 Q- ~
saw a nation conquer fear itself with a New Deal, new jobs, a new sense of
q. N5 u7 Q) `8 D3 L: _common purpose. Yes we can.) D, O# ~, [1 a N
, [3 P; l3 m* _- J" u
When the bombs fell on our harbor and tyranny threatened the world, she was
& q/ ~7 T% D" i+ q% c! Pthere to witness a generation rise to greatness and a democracy was saved.
! }, ~" F E1 i: _Yes we can.

( p0 [& I7 }4 g# X7 X, X5 x# fShe was there for the buses in Montgomery, the hoses in Birmingham, a
4 D( g- v: i' Y9 ~/ Bbridge in Selma, and a preacher from Atlanta who told a people that "We
3 Z) U0 q2 s% S7 X/ f! x0 [Shall Overcome." Yes we can.
/ v9 z' t7 \5 _; \9 w# Z# Q: @( ? @/ T+ F
A man touched down on the moon, a wall came down in Berlin, a world was
' w k& a$ P$ c* gconnected by our own science and imagination.
( F& _6 B5 t C5 Y2 [. f8 P: E+ }) {8 W1 ~; N {9 a: ^) x( w
And this year, in this election, she touched her finger to a screen, and 7 r2 s$ N4 V9 p3 S$ b' H: o
cast her vote, because after 106 years in America, through the best of
# Z9 O2 m& f9 ^) F& Vtimes and the darkest of hours, she knows how America can change.
% H. b S' t' t* h( t
5 \ o5 u6 ^1 F) EYes we can.6 g; v" }! d2 i! B" l1 o- Q
